ICSI

What is ICSI?

ICSI refers to Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, it involves injecting a single live sperm directly into the center of a human egg. This technique is for couples who have had failure to fertilize in a previous in vitro fertilization (IVF) attempt or couples with severe male infertility factor like low sperm count, poor sperm motility . This procedure helps in achieving successful pregnancy to obtain fertilized embryos for those who had lost all hope.

Who should consider ICSI?

ICSI should be considered in the cases of male factor infertility with an abnormal semen analysis. Reasons include:

  • Previous poor fertilization with IVF
  • Variable sperm counts
  • Unexplained infertility

Many patients choose to undergo the ICSI procedure just in order to maximize success rates.

How successful is ICSI?

Most IVF programs see that about 70-85% of eggs injected using ICSI become fertilized. We call this the fertilization rate, which is different from the pregnancy success rate. The ICSI success is considered high as around 80-85 percent of eggs fertilize normally.

What are the risks associated with ICSI?

There are several risks. Which are:

  • Increased risk of miscarriage
  • Heart problems for affected infants that may require surgery
  • Increased risk of behavior or learning disabilities
  • Increased risk of infertility in your children during their adulthood
  • The risk of having a chromosomal abnormality like Down's syndrome is not increased with ICSI but increases with maternal age.

Though there is no conclusive evidence to prove this but several studies also claims that ICSI delays development of brain too.

Are there differences in embryo quality or pregnancy rates between ICSI and non-ICSI embryos?

There is no overall difference between the embryos of ICSI procedure and non-ICSI embryos. Though many specialist say that ICSI increases embryo yield from the given number of eggs.
